Can I use nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) whilst breastfeeding?

Nicotine is excreted in breast milk in quantities that may affect the child even in therapeutic doses. Like smoking, Nicotinell® or any other nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) should be avoided during breastfeeding. However, if you are unable to quit without the use of NRT, seek advice from your pharmacist or doctor before starting a program. You should not use Nicotinell® Patch or any other NRT Patch if you are breastfeeding. Intermittent NRT products, such as Nicotinell® Gum, may be used instead and should be used immediately after breastfeeding, to ensure that the baby gets the smallest amount of nicotine possible from breast milk.

Remember always follow the advice of your doctor or pharmacist.
